In respectful memory of Dame Jilly Cooper — author, advocate, and lifelong friend to animals.

Although I did not know her personally, I have long admired her from afar as both a writer and an animal lover. Her warmth, humour, and compassion defined not only her work but the way she lived her life. Through her writing and her actions, she championed the belief that animals are sentient beings, deserving of understanding, dignity, and affection.
Jilly Cooper’s influence extended far beyond literature. She served as a Patron of Compassion in World Farming, The Racehorse Sanctuary & Rehoming Centre, Secret World Wildlife Rescue, Many Tears Animal Rescue, The Cinnamon Trust, and The Animal Health Trust. She was also instrumental in establishing the Animals in War Memorial in London, inspired by her book of the same name (Animals in War - Published in 1984), to honour the courage and sacrifice of animals in conflict. Additionally, she lent her voice and support to Paws for Reading, a programme encouraging children’s literacy through the calming presence of dogs.
Her commitment to animal welfare was practical as well as heartfelt; a blend of advocacy, authorship, and quiet generosity. She raised funds, awareness, and expectations of how animals should be regarded within our society.
May her legacy continue to inspire writers, readers, and animal lovers alike to treat all living beings with the same empathy and respect she so gracefully embodied.
